We observed various clinical manifestatins of the 33 cases with hypoparathyroidism; the 23 cases diagnosed at the department of internal medicine, Seoul National Universtiy Hospital and the 10 caees reported from some journals published in Korea duning the recent 16 year period.
Of 33 patients with hypoparathyroidism 16 had idiopathic hypoparathyroidism, 9 postsurgical hypoparathyroidsim, 6 pseudohypoparathyroidism, and 2 pseudop pseudohypoparathyroidism.
Fifteen patients presented as carpopedel spasm, 13 patients as paresthesia, 10 patients as seizure, 5 patients as altered consuionusness and so on. Trousseau sign was positive in 20 patients, Chvostek sign in 15 patients, cataract in 6 patients, ectodermal changes in 6 patients and I patient with mucocutaneous candidiasis was observed.
The serm concentrations of calcium in all patients except 2 patients with pseudopseudohypoparathyroidism were below the normal range. The serum coccentratins of iPTH in all patients with idiopathic and pseudohypoparathyroidism except 3 patients were below and above the normal range, respectively.
They complained various neurological symptoms at presentation. If the patient has unexplained neurological symptoms, the serum concentrations of calcium and iPTH should be measured.
